Joshua Pilcher

Joshua Pilcher was a fur trader and Indian agent. In the early 1800's he was factor of the American Fur Trade Company at what is today Bellevue, Nebraska. Between 1833 and 1835 it is believed that he took a wife from the Council Bluff area which today is Council Bluffs, Iowa. The woman is said to have been half French and half Omaha Indian. In early 1834 John Pilcher was born. His mother died shortly after of cholera. Joshua Pilcher had no interest in raising his son, so John was taken in by Big Elk, an Omaha chief. The Omaha tribe raised John, but he kept his family name of Pilcher. He married Harriet Arlington and had 10 children. When he died at 64 he had dozens of descendants bearing the Pilcher name.

Howard and Allene Pilcher

Howard Pilcher was a member of the Winnebago Indian tribe. After marrying his wife Allene they started today’s "Pilcher's Indian Store." They started it in South Sioux City, Nebraska with Howard doing leather work for their customers. Later they moved it to Fort Calhoun, Nebraska and then later to its present location in Omaha, Nebraska. Mary, Howard and Allene's daughter, runs the store now with the help of her three children.
